The City of Hoover elects the following positions at each 4-year election term:

• Mayor
• Council Members - currently 7 at-large members

The Alabama League of Municipalities has published "Duties of the Mayor and Council" to help understand the distinct roles and separation of duties. 

Hoover's last election was held in 2020. In 2021, the Alabama State Legislature voted to move municipal elections off the same calendar year as presidential elections. Officials elected in 2020 will serve until 2025. Municipal elections will be held on the 4th Tuesday in August, 2025.

The City Clerk's office is responsible for overseeing the election process.
