Derrick M. Murphy was raised in the Ensley community of Birmingham by his grandparents, Ruth B. Murphy and the late Arthur-Robert Murphy. He is a graduate of Holy Family High School and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received an undergraduate and masters degree in Civil Engineering. He is currently employed at an engineering firm in Birmingham, and a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church.

Derrick believes he is blessed to have a strong, supportive wife, Shenavia, and three children.

Derrick was appointed to the Hoover School Board in 2011, and has served as President of the Hoover Board of Education. Also, he has been a member of the City of Hoover Board of Zoning Adjustment, and was elected to his first term to the Hoover City Council in August 2016.

In addition, Derrick created an organization called the Hoover City Dad Brigade to get dads and father figures more involved in Hoover City Schools. The Hoover City Dad Brigade organizes more than 500 plus fathers, grandfathers, and high school boys to volunteer in a back-to-school cleanup event.
